In a city like Bangkok or Singapore, your favourite scent can fade before lunch. Heat and humidity make perfume evaporate faster, so finding a long lasting perfume is not only about the scent you love. It comes down to three things, how concentrated it is, how the scent is built and how you wear it. Here is how to make yours last from morning to evening.
EDC, EDT, EDP and Parfum, what is the difference?
The name on the bottle tells you how much fragrance oil is inside. The more oil, the longer the scent stays on your skin.
- Eau de Cologne (EDC), about 2 to 4% oil. Light and fresh, but gone in an hour or two.
- Eau de Toilette (EDT), about 5 to 15%. Easy for daytime, needs topping up.
- Eau de Parfum (EDP), about 15 to 20%. The best balance of presence and staying power, and the one we recommend for warm climates.
- Parfum, the most concentrated. Deep and long lasting, at a higher price.
Every Somuti Eau de Parfum has 20% fragrance oil and stays on the skin for around 6 to 8 hours. That depends on the weather, the scent family and your skin. On a day when you sweat a lot, it may fade sooner.
Which scents last longest in hot weather?
Concentration is half the story. The first notes you smell, the top notes, evaporate fastest. The base notes, such as woods, amber and musk, are what keep a perfume with you through the day. In the heat, look for a fresh opening with a soft woody base underneath.
Fresh scents for daytime and strong sun
- Arctic Sorbet, bright grapefruit settling into cedar and amber, which help it last.
- First Departure, pineapple and green tea, light and easy, with patchouli underneath.
- Fading Distance, mandarin and sea air, finishing on soft sandalwood.
Light florals for the office
- Second Eiffel, freesia and geranium, clean rather than sweet, with a trace of incense.
- Victorian Email, rose and lily, a classic floral for every day.
Warm, deep scents for evenings and air-conditioned rooms
- Afternoon Habit, pink pepper, labdanum and musk.
- Velvet Afterdark, leather, cardamom and peony.
- Egyptian Candy, vanilla and jasmine.
- Robotic Artisan, cedar, agarwood and jasmine.
Not sure yet? The Discovery Set (790 THB) has four scents in 3ml vials, so you can wear each one for a full day before choosing a bottle. The Songwat 5 Set (990 THB) has all five scents from our Songwat 5 collection.
How to make perfume last longer on your skin
Spray where your body is warm. Warm skin releases the scent slowly through the day.
- Neck and behind the ears, so the scent rises softly whenever you move.
- Wrists, then let it dry on its own. Rubbing changes the scent and makes it fade faster.
- Inner elbows, another warm spot that lets the scent spread gently.
- Centre of the chest, close to you without filling the room.
The real secret is moisturised skin. Dry skin absorbs perfume and lets it disappear. Smooth on body oil after your shower, then spray the matching scent on top. The Arctic Sorbet Body Oil with the Arctic Sorbet Eau de Parfum is a good example. The scent stays clearer and lasts noticeably longer.
How to store perfume in a hot climate
- Keep it away from sunlight and heat, which change the scent over time.
- Do not keep it in the bathroom. Steam and changing temperatures wear it out quickly.
- A cool, dark wardrobe or drawer is the best place, ideally in its original box.
- Avoid leaving it in a hot car, even for an afternoon.
